This is a tutorial on how to create a Half Double Crochet (HDC) foundation chain and add a color change to it. This is useful when you want your color changes to be clean in your foundation row. Follow the first group of steps to make a foundation chain and the second group to add in a color change.
Half Double Crochet Foundation Chain
1. Slip stitch (sl st), ch 3 in Color A
2. Yarn Over (YO), insert your hook into 3rd ch from the hook, YO and pull thru the 1st loop on the hook (3 loops on hook).
3. YO, pull thru the 1st loop on the hook (this creates the foundation chain st) (3 loops on hook).
4. YO, pull thru all loops (1 loop on hook).
5. YO, insert the hook into the foundation chain stitch from Step 3, pull thru the 1st loop (3 loops on hook).
6. YO, pull thru the 1st loop (creates the next foundation chain) (3 loops on hook).
7. YO, pull thru all loops (1 loop on hook).
8. Repeat Steps 6 and 7 until the desired number of foundation chain stitches have been completed.
Color Change in a Half Double Crochet Foundation Chain
1. Complete one less than the desired number of foundation chain stitches in Color A.
2. Work the last stitch in Color A as before but stop before the final YO and pull thru (stop after Step 5 above)
3. YO in Color B (hold the tail in back of your work to be woven in later), pull thru all 3 loops. This completes the last st in the Color A.
4. Continue working the HDC foundation chain using Color B. The next foundation chain will be the first for Color B.
